If you don’t fancy getting the car, you can easily find an affordable taxi via Bolt or Taxiin – this is definitely recommended, especially if you’re planning to try the traditional Poncha.
This top 5 is listed in no particular order; each place is slightly different, but the common thread is that we’ve always had a lovely meal there!

1. Casa de Pasto das Eiras
📍 Estrada das Eiras 122, Caniço
An absolute favourite for traditional, charcoal-grilled dishes. Head here for a delicious ‘Espetada’ – the traditionally prepared meat skewer served with a portion of Milho Frito and a dressed salad on the side – or ask if they have fresh tuna fillet. A cosy, rustic spot offering excellent value for money. Well-known among the locals, they also serve a daily special and are often completely fully booked.
2. Traineira Grill
📍 Rua da Abegoaria 2A, Caniço
Here you’ll find a cosy and beautifully decorated restaurant, where the service is always warm and friendly. If you’re a fan of good meat or fish dishes, this is the perfect place for you. They also have an extensive wine list, a lovely open kitchen and a dry-ageing cabinet stocked with top-quality produce.
3. Klenk’s Café
📍 Estrada Ponta da Oliveira 57, Caniço
At Klenk’s, you can enjoy both Madeiran cuisine and international dishes with German influences. The restaurant is attractively decorated and features a lovely terrace for warmer days. It serves high-quality meat dishes, delicious salads and side dishes. There really is something for everyone on the menu here.
4. Laranjinha Bistro & Grill
📍 Estrada José Avelino Pinto, Ocean Garden, Caniço
A stylishly decorated restaurant with a Michelin-style ambience, serving delicious Portuguese fish and meat dishes. Think tataki, carpaccio and tomahawk steaks for true meat lovers. A beautiful and spotlessly clean open kitchen; the staff are attentive and can offer excellent advice on the wines or dishes they serve. This is truly a gem of a restaurant! Booking is recommended.
5. Venda do Bello
📍 Estrada das Eiras 5, Caniço
A cosy, informal ‘tascabar’ where, as well as bar games (darts, table football), you can enjoy delicious authentic ‘Pregos’ (steak in bolo do caco bread) and hearty ponchas. Great for lunch or a late-afternoon drink with a poncha – why not try the Pescador Poncha, for example? A real energy boost!
